How to Add Google AdSense and Advertising Banners to your Elgg Powered Social Network
Making Money from Social Networking is something that you would love to do, Specially if you have done a successful steps by working hard to keep members satisfied with your social network application, and some of you may think it’s the time to Make Money from My Social Network!
I got lots of emails asking me about how to add Google AdSense to Elgg powered social network they own and run by themselves and would like to earn money from AdSense, and 125×125 banner ads that they may want to sale or link to their affiliates, so I am going to tell those who need Ads plugin for Elgg application that it’s ready for you to use, and it’s not new to you if you are an Elgg community owner, it’s just the same Custom-Index plugin for Elgg but with some magical touch!
Basically what I did was editing some codes plus adding a few files and images to the original plugin to give you the ability to add ads to your social network. If you think that I am a programmer then you are wrong, I am just a simple guy started as a web designer and I am not on the blogging and social networking world, I am just trying to share what I have and what people asked me to get this updated plugin, Here is a DEMO for it on New Media Bloggers Social Network on the main domain of this blog.
I have set a special page to download Ads-Custom-Index plugin for Elgg 1.5, it’s a normal static one page, I want to try this kind of pages and how it will respond to it’s traffic and download as I know that Elgg search is increasing everyday from other posts about Elgg that I have posted before, and it’s still the best posts that drive traffic to my blog
Ads Custom-Index Elgg plugin for Making Money Online from your own Social Network
Installation:
If you are already running Custom-Index plugin on your Elgg installation and you would like to upgrade it to the Ads-Custom-Index plugin then just remove it and install Ads-Custom-Index plugin!
Don’t forget to sign-out from your community account to check how it will check how your ads will look like on the main page, maybe opening a different type of browser will help you check both logged-in and out, use FireFox and IE together for example!

I have tried this plugin my self, and tried to update it with some extra options, and I am giving it to you, so I am not responsible for any damage to your social network! So plz take care and always backup your work before installing any new plugins!
How to use it?
It’s very simple, I have named the files with related names, you will find it easy o manage if you have a little experience with HTML code and you know how to add your AdSense code to any simple web page!
In the “mod\custom_index\views\default\canvas\layouts” folder you will find the important files, these files are:
- hot_spot.php
- ads_336x280.php
- ads_front_125.php
- new_index.php
- _new_index.php
You can simply edit these files to put your own 125×125 ads, change Google AdSense code to yours, and change the hot spot image. Find images on this folder “mod\custom_index\images”, add images on this folder to make it easy for you to manage! That’s all!
I have tested this plugin on Elgg 1.5, if you discovered that it’s working on Elgg 1.6 or any other newer versions, then plz tell me!
