Interview with Mohamed ElGohary of Technoemedia – Famous Bloggers Club

This is the first time I make an interview with an Arabic and Egyptian Blogger, his name is Mohamed ElGhohary,  and he is interested in Mobile Technology and its relation with Neomedia. Serial Blogger in Technology, Media, and Sociopolitical issues and Contributor in All-Lingua Project as a translator at Global Voices Online. His blog is Technoemedia, let’s enjoy this interview with him.

Q. Tell the world something about your self and what you do in life?

I’m a 23 year old Egypt who studies Biomedical Engineering. I currently work as a QA Engineer in a telecommunication company. I’m interested in social media, mobile technology, sharing methods.

Twitter @ircpresident and Facebook

Q. What was the story behind your Blog? (how you start Blogging – since when – how did you named your Blog).

I started blogging in the beginning of 2006. Before that I used to write and moderate in a Teen magazine online forum. I knew about the activists movement back then and I saw a friend of mine starting blogging to write some kind of self thoughts. So I started several blogs. Personal, social, political, I even used blogs to document courses I took.

My first blog (http://ircpresident.blogspot.com) is named My Own Prison. It is the name of a band called Creed, their debut album. I really liked the song back then. Then several blogs came with each other like the social blog: Paradigm Shifters which in the same time the extension of a magazine writing club in the same online magazine when the idea didn’t work out. I then transformed it to my political and personal project (since Paradigm shifters was more of a group blog), the name is Politikia and came in it my socio-political thoughts about change and analyzing the Egyptian society. Then I became fed up with all blogging related activities for a long time. Because I saw change as a nearly impossible dream.

During this downtime I was always active in microblogging via my twitter and in social networking via Facebook. I developed some passion for social digging and had a nice experience in managing a successful group for my old school and managing events, extending online activity to a real life activity made me feel how powerful can social media tools can be.

So after that I tried to find more ways to preach web2.0 and how to introduce it to the average internet user, since I felt many people feared Web2.0 tools since they are always connected to activism and consequently getting detained and tortured. Also since I saw many web2.0 blogs talking in English (which is a language barrier for a lot of internet users in Egypt), I tried to write how-tos and blog posts about Web2.0 tools and how can it be useful for the masses.

Q. Have you earned any money from been a Blogger? (How you did it – add links to useful websites for making money online – If NOT then tell us why you blog)

I do not earn money for my blog. If I have enough time I can get a job as a consultant for several organizations to train people on new media and Web2.0 tools. But I already have a time consuming job in something I like. For the reason why I blog, I think that online sharing and Web2.0 tools in a mass sharing level can be an effective way for changing to the better. Since any voice can be heard, not essentially politically, but in literally any field.

Q. Would you tell us about ONE of your famous posts? (Why you think it’s famous.. it could be because of “content – traffic – comments – search engines”)

I think the most effective post I wrote was a human rights issue, when I translated a post by the Egyptian Blogger Wael Abbas about the torture and death of a 12 year old child. I was quoted in several major Blogging communities, English and other languages. It also really increases traffic and search engines results for my blog. My Arabic Web2.0 blog had many reactions as unique content, featured in Egyptian newspapers and distributed for educational purposes.

Q. If I asked you to suggest ONE Blogger friend to send him/her a Famous Blogger Club invitation, who you will suggest? (plz, try to recommend an English blog)

I would recommend Tarek Amr, who writes a technical blog in English called Gr33nData, and also developing a geo-tagged micro-blogging service called BaralBait. He is also a author at Global Voices Online.
